Full Highlight Aftercare: What to Do in the First 72 Hours

Right after a Full Highlight (90 minutes, starting at $150), your number one rule is simple: wait 48 to 72 hours before you wash. That pause helps your tone settle and keeps your blonde looking clean instead of going dull or brassy. Here in Bonita Springs, FL, that timing matters even more because heat, humidity, and our subtropical sun can speed up fading fast if you jump straight into beach, pool, or heavy workouts.
The first 48 to 72 hours after full highlights: what we want you to avoid
Think of the first two to three days as your “lock it in” window. We generally recommend keeping your hair as undisturbed as possible so the toner stays true and your hair stays calmer after lightening.
First 72-hour non-negotiables: Don’t wash, don’t swim (pool or ocean), and skip intense workouts that leave you drenched in sweat.
Skip washing, even “just a quick rinse”
Water alone can swell the hair and make your tone shift sooner than it should. If your scalp feels a little oily, that’s normal. Brush gently, use a loose clip, and let it ride until you hit that 48 to 72-hour mark.
Avoid sweat, friction, and tight hats
Heavy sweating can shorten the life of your toner, and tight hats tend to rub the hairline and part. If you golf or you’re outside a lot in the North Bonita Springs and Estero area near the residential golf communities, go for shade when you can and keep anything on your head loose and breathable.
No pool, no ocean, no hot tub
Chlorine and salt are both rough on freshly lightened hair. And around here, it’s easy to head to Bonita Beach or a community pool right after an appointment, especially if you’re coming from I-75 or US-41 and you’re already out near Coconut Point. Give your highlights a couple days first. Your future self will thank you.
Days 4 to 7: how to keep your tone clean in Bonita Springs sun and humidity
Once you’re past the first wash, the goal is to protect tone and moisture at the same time. Lightened hair tends to lose water faster, and that’s when you’ll see frizz, rough ends, and that “straw” feeling start creeping in.
We’ve had clients come in feeling like their hair was “frizzy hay, ” then leave with it “silky smooth and bouncy.” The big difference long-term is what happens at home in the first week, not just what happens in our chair.
- Keep water warm, not hot. Hot water opens the cuticle and fades toner faster.
- Dial back hot tools. If you style, use heat protectant every time and keep your iron temps reasonable.
- Plan for beach and pool days. If you do swim later in the week, rinse with fresh water right after and follow with conditioner.
If you’re a snowbird, a retiree who’s outdoors most days, or you’ve got an active household doing pool days on repeat, this week is when your highlights either stay bright or start slipping. A little protection goes a long way.
Color-safe shampoo, purple shampoo, and a weekly mask: the routine that actually holds up
You don’t need a shelf full of products. You do need the right basics, used consistently. We’re big on quality product lines in-salon because the wrong cleanser can strip tone quickly and leave lightened pieces feeling rough.
Start with sulfate-free, color-safe shampoo
A sulfate-free, color-safe shampoo helps you keep brightness without over-drying the hair. Focus shampoo on the scalp. Let the suds rinse through the ends instead of scrubbing highlighted sections.
Use purple shampoo 1 to 2 times a week, not every wash
If your highlights are blonde or you pull warm easily, purple shampoo for highlights helps control brass. Most people do best at 1 to 2 times weekly. Too much purple shampoo can leave hair feeling dry, or make lighter pieces look a bit flat.
Do one real moisture mask each week
Lightening changes the hair. That’s not scary, it just means your hair usually needs more moisture than it did before. A weekly mask helps keep ends soft and reduces breakage over time. If you’re unsure what type your hair needs, tell us what you’re seeing at home and we’ll point you in the right direction.
Swim, sun, and golf: full highlight aftercare for beach communities and pool culture
Bonita Springs and the surrounding beach communities make it easy to fade color fast. Sun, salt, and chlorine don’t just lighten your highlights. They can shift your tone warmer and make the hair feel drier.
Here’s the practical routine we like for pool and beach seasons once you’re past that first 72-hour window:
- Before swimming: Rinse your hair with fresh water and apply conditioner or a leave-in. It helps reduce how much chlorine or salt your hair soaks up.
- After swimming: Rinse right away. Don’t let chlorine or salt dry on the hair while you run errands.
- For sun days: Use a leave-in with UV and heat protection. If you wear a hat, keep it soft and not too tight at the hairline.
- For frequent swimmers: Plan on a mask day each week and keep purple shampoo in your rotation so brass doesn’t sneak up on you.
If your schedule includes Naples, Fort Myers, or Fort Myers Beach on a regular basis, this is the section that saves your color between visits. A little protection is cheaper than a big correction later.
If something feels “off” after your full highlight, reach out sooner (we’re easy to talk to)
A little dryness is normal after lightening, especially if you’re used to air-drying and suddenly need more conditioner. What we don’t want is you stressing at home or trying a random fix that makes things worse. If your tone looks too warm too fast, your hair feels unusually fragile, or you have questions about what to do after full highlights, call or email us and we’ll walk you through the next step.
“First visit to Lush. Jamie did an excellent job with my color and cut. So, so satisfied! Receptionist helped her with glazing and blowout…excellent as well. Highly recommend!!! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ You must go there!”
