After Your Glaze/Toner: What to Do (and Avoid) First 72 Hours

If you just had a glaze/toner with us in Bonita Springs, the single biggest rule is simple: hold off on shampooing for 48 to 72 hours. That short wait helps your tone stay true, keeps the gloss looking fresh, and reduces that “it faded too fast” feeling. A glaze/toner is one of our quickest services at 30 minutes, but what you do right after matters just as much as what we did in the chair. And around here, sun, pool time, and even a sweaty round of golf can pull warmth back in fast if you don’t protect it for those first few days.
The first 48 to 72 hours: keep the toner on your hair, not down the drain
Do this right away: treat your hair like it just got “set.” Gentle handling now usually means longer-lasting tone later.
- Don’t shampoo for 48 to 72 hours. If your scalp feels oily, keep it simple: a quick cool-water rinse is fine, then towel-blot and let it air dry if you can.
- Skip the pool and ocean. Chlorine and salt can grab onto fresh tone, especially on lighter blondes and highlighted hair.
- Avoid heavy sweating. Intense workouts and hot yoga can push moisture and salts through the hair and fade a brand-new toner faster than most people expect.
- Leave it alone. Don’t pick at your scalp, scratch, or over-brush. Keep hair ties loose so you don’t crease the hair while it’s still settling.
- If you must use heat, keep it low. A quick blow-dry on low or medium with a heat protectant is fine. Flat ironing the same day is where we see shine dull out the fastest.
Local note for Bonita Springs: If you’re heading out for beach time, a boat day, or a pool afternoon, wait those 48 to 72 hours. Sun, salt, and chlorine are the fastest way to pull warmth back into a fresh tone here.
Days 4 to 7: the “keep it glossy” week (sun, sweat, and shower habits)
Once you’re past the 72-hour mark, you can get back to normal life, but your toner will hold up better if you’re a little picky for the first week. Most fading we see early on comes down to heat, harsh cleansers, and a lot of water exposure in a short time.
If you’re outdoors a lot
Wear a hat when you can. UV exposure tends to fade gloss and bring out brassiness, especially on lightened hair. That’s a common issue for our North Bonita Springs and Estero clients who spend a lot of time golfing or poolside.
If you’re washing more than twice that week
Use lukewarm water and keep shampoo focused on your scalp. Let the suds run through the lengths instead of scrubbing the mids and ends. Your hair will stay shinier, and your toner usually stays truer.
If you’re styling daily
Keep heat tools a step lower than usual and don’t “touch up” the same section over and over. Heat is a big reason a toner loses that fresh-reflective look even when the color still looks fine.
Purple shampoo after toner: yes, but only when brassiness shows up
Purple or blue shampoo doesn’t “erase” a toner in one wash, but it can shift tone if you overdo it. We like it as a tool, not a daily habit. The goal is to keep your hair looking the way it did when you left, not to keep pushing it cooler and cooler until it goes dull.
Our general rule: use a sulfate-free, color-safe shampoo most washes, then use purple or blue shampoo occasionally when you notice warmth returning.
Start conservatively: once a week is plenty for most blondes. If your hair grabs violet quickly or feels dry, pull back and tell us. We’ll adjust your routine.
If you’re not sure which direction your tone should go, ask. Toner aftercare isn’t one-size-fits-all. It depends on how light you are, what kind of warmth you pull, and how often you’re in the pool or sun around Bonita Springs.
How long your glaze/toner lasts and when to refresh (most people: 4 to 8 weeks)
Most glaze/toner results look their best for about 4 to 8 weeks. If you’re swimming a lot, spending long hours in the sun, or washing frequently, you’ll usually be on the shorter end. If you’re gentle with heat and using color-safe products, you’ll often stretch it longer.
Here’s the sign it’s time: you’re not unhappy with your haircut, but your color starts looking a little warmer, flatter, or “less expensive” than it did week one. That’s the sweet spot for a quick refresh. Our glaze/toner service is $30 and 30 minutes, so it’s an easy add-on when you want your tone back without doing a full color appointment.
We see a lot of seasonal guests and snowbirds who want their tone to last through travel, dinners out, and beach weekends. Planning your refresh before you’re fully brassy is what keeps the color looking consistent in photos.
If you’re nearby: We’re convenient for North Bonita Springs and Estero, so popping in for a quick re-tone before or after shopping at Coconut Point is a common plan.
If something feels “off” after toner, reach out sooner, not later
A fresh toner should look like clean tone plus shine. It shouldn’t feel sticky, overly dry, or like it went darker than expected once you got home and saw it in different lighting. If anything about your tone bothers you in the first week, let us know and we’ll talk it through. Most fixes are small when we catch them early.
Great relaxing atmosphere. Very reasonably priced. I love the Italian product line. I see Alicia and she brought my hair back from looking like frizzy hay to silky smooth and bouncy!!

We’re a team, and we pay attention to the details. Another first-time visitor put it simply after a color and glaze support at the front desk: they were “so, so satisfied.” That’s the standard we aim for every time, even on quick services.
If you’re in Bonita Springs, Estero, Naples, Fort Myers, San Carlos Park, or Fort Myers Beach and you need a quick product pick-up or a toner refresh, we’ll help you get a plan that fits your hair and your routine. We’re appointment-only so your time isn’t wasted, and free parking makes it easy to swing by.
