Tape in Extensions Aftercare: First 48 Hours and 2-Week Aftercare
By LUSH Hair Lounge | September 11, 2026
Tape In Extensions install time is 60 minutes, starting at $300. Keeping them looking fresh comes down to a few simple rules, especially in Bonita Springs humidity.

The single most important rule for tape in extensions aftercare is this: give the adhesive at least 48 hours to fully set. That means no washing and no heavy sweating. In our North Bonita Springs and Estero area, heat and humidity can push moisture right into the bonds if you rush it, and that’s when tapes start sliding sooner than they should.
We’ll walk you through the basics before you leave, but this guide is here for real life. If you’re heading to the beach, golfing, or just dealing with a sweaty Florida week, these steps keep your tapes secure and your natural hair protected.
The first 48 hours: the do’s and don’ts that prevent slippage
For the first two days, think “dry and calm.” Tape adhesive needs time to cure, and the quickest way to compromise it is water, steam, or sweat sitting at the roots.
Do this right away
- Keep your hair completely dry. Avoid showers that create steam around your scalp too.
- Sleep with hair loosely braided or in a low, soft pony. A silk pillowcase helps reduce tugging.
- If you have to brush, use a loop or extensions brush and keep one hand at the root so you’re not pulling on the tapes.
Skip these for 48 hours
- No washing. If your scalp feels oily, use a light dry shampoo only, and keep it off the tape area.
- No heavy workouts, saunas, or hot yoga. Sweat and heat soften adhesive.
- No oil at the root. That includes hair oils, scalp serums, and heavy leave-ins applied near the tapes.
Bonita Springs reality check: humidity counts as “moisture exposure.” If you’re running errands around Coconut Point or spending time outdoors, keep hair off your neck and let your scalp stay as cool as possible for those first two days.
Days 3 to 14: washing, heat styling, and the stuff that sneaks up on tape bonds
Once you’re past the 48-hour mark, you can wash and style again, but technique matters. Tape bonds do best when they’re kept clean, dry between washes, and free of oily buildup.
How to wash hair after tape ins
- Use a sulfate-free, oil-free shampoo. Focus on your scalp and let the suds run through the lengths instead of roughing up the bonds.
- Conditioner goes mid-length to ends only. Keep conditioner and masks off the tape area so you don’t loosen the adhesive.
- Dry the roots well. Air-drying is fine for your ends, but tapes don’t love sitting damp at the scalp. A quick blow-dry at the root usually helps.
Heat styling without cooking the tapes
Heat is not the enemy. Heat placed directly on the bond is. Use a heat protectant on the lengths, then keep your flat iron and curling iron away from the tape area by at least an inch or two. And skip teasing or backcombing near the tapes. It tends to grab hair at the roots and stress your natural hair where it’s held between two panels.
Swimming, beach days, and sweat
We generally recommend waiting 48 to 72 hours after install before swimming. If you’re in the Gulf, a pool, or you’re sweating a lot, rinse with fresh water as soon as you can and use a light, non-oily leave-in on the mids and ends. Salt and chlorine dry out extension hair fast, and that dryness leads to tangling that pulls at your bonds.
Best products for tape in extensions, plus the 2 habits that matter most
If you keep it simple, tape ins stay pretty low-stress. The “best” products are usually the ones that don’t leave residue at the bonds.
Product types we recommend
- Sulfate-free, oil-free shampoo to keep bonds clean without softening adhesive.
- Lightweight conditioner on mids and ends, never at the tapes.
- Heat protectant before blow-drying or hot tools.
- Leave-in spray (non-oily) for beach and pool weeks, focused on lengths.
Two habits that protect your hair
First, brush gently and often enough to prevent tangles. Start at the ends, then work up, supporting the root with your hand.
Second, don’t “pick” at a corner you feel. If you can feel a tape, that’s a sign to let us take a look so we can protect your natural hair.
Tape in extensions maintenance timing: plan on maintenance every 6 to 8 weeks. That schedule helps prevent slippage and helps us keep the weight distribution on your natural hair where it should be.
If a tape slips or your scalp feels irritated, we want to know fast
A little “new install awareness” is normal. You might notice the tapes when you touch your scalp, especially during the first few days. What isn’t normal is pain, persistent itching, or a tape that’s clearly lifting.
If something feels off, reach out right away. Don’t try to trim, glue, or press a tape back down at home. Quick fixes usually turn into harder removals, and we’d rather protect your natural hair than gamble with it.
“Excellent products and overall service. I highly recommend them.”

Local scheduling tip: If you’re in North Bonita Springs or stopping by Coconut Point, we can often fit a quick check-in around your day. We’re appointment only, with free parking, card payments, and wheelchair accessibility. If you live in Bonita Springs, Estero, Naples, Fort Myers, San Carlos Park, or Fort Myers Beach, staying on top of maintenance is the difference between “still perfect” and “why is this slipping?”
Quick recap, then we’ll take it from there at your next visit
Tape ins are meant to look effortless, but they’re not “set it and forget it.” If you protect the bond area, keep oils off the tapes, and come in for your 6 to 8 week maintenance, they tend to stay secure and comfortable.
And if you’re ever unsure, ask. We’d rather answer a simple question now than have you deal with tangling, lifting, or unnecessary stress on your natural hair later.
