Thick Hair Add On Aftercare: the First 48 Hours and the First Week
By LUSH Hair Lounge | October 18, 2026
Appointment only, free parking, card payments accepted, wheelchair accessible.
Our thick hair add on is a quick, 10-minute upgrade that starts at $5, and the most important aftercare rule is simple: give it 48 hours before you wash your hair or do anything that gets your scalp hot and sweaty. In Bonita Springs, humidity and “just one quick beach day” can sneak up fast, so those first two days matter more than most people think.
If you protect the attachment and keep the hair dry early on, you’ll hold onto that extra volume longer and avoid the little issues that lead to slipping, flattening, or tangling.
First 48 hours: keep it dry, cool, and hands-off
Think of the first 48 hours as “set time.” We want the add on to stay exactly where we placed it, with no extra moisture, heat, or friction working against it.
48-hour non-negotiables: No washing, no heavy sweating, and no hot tools. Keep your hair dry and your roots calm.
Washing, sweating, and heat
For two days, skip shampoo and skip workouts that leave you drenched. Sweat softens the base and creates slip, especially in our Bonita Springs weather. If you need to move, keep it light, stay in the shade, and let your scalp cool down quickly.
Hold off on blow dryers, flat irons, and curling irons for the first week. Early heat can flatten the volume you just paid for, and it also adds friction right where we want stability.
Quick day-to-day tips that prevent little problems
- Keep your hair up and off your neck when it’s hot out. A loose, high pony is better than a tight elastic.
- Don’t pick at the attachment area. If something feels “off, ” we’d rather you call us than try to fix it at home.
- Avoid heavy oils at the root. Oils plus humidity can lead to slip and collapse.
Days 3 to 7: detangling, beach rules, and keeping volume in humidity
Once you’re past the first 48 hours, you can get back into a normal rhythm. The goal for the first week is gentle handling, especially if you’re in and out of shopping centers in North Bonita Springs or Estero, then straight to a tee time or a breezy patio.
When it’s safe to swim, and what to do if you get wet
Skip chlorinated pools, salt water, and hot tubs for 72 hours. That’s a big one for our local beach days. If you end up around water anyway, keep your hair secured up and away from splashing.
If you do get exposed after that 72-hour window, rinse with fresh water as soon as you can and smooth on a lightweight leave-in conditioner through mid-lengths and ends. Don’t scrub at the root. Pat and gently squeeze water out instead.
Detangle the right way
Detangle from the ends first, then work up toward the roots. Use a wide-tooth comb or a gentle detangling brush. If you start at the scalp and yank down, that’s when people create unnecessary stress at the attachment and lose volume early.
Humidity note: In our subtropical climate, frizz control is tempting, but heavy creams can weigh the add on down. Start light. You can always add more on day 2 of styling.
Post thick hair add on products we actually want you using
Good products don’t need to be complicated. They just need to be the right type, used in the right place. We’ve had clients tell us the right routine was the difference between hair that felt like frizzy hay and hair that stayed silky smooth and bouncy, even in Florida weather.
Sulfate-free shampoo
Cleans without over-stripping and helps keep the hair feeling soft. Focus shampoo on your scalp, not the lengths.
Lightweight leave-in conditioner
Use mid-lengths to ends to prevent tangles and protect against humidity. Keep it off the root area.
Heat protectant (when you return to heat styling)
After the first week, a good heat protectant helps you style without cooking the hair. Keep your tools moving and avoid repeated passes.
We’re also big on quality product lines in general. If you already love a specific line at home, bring it up at your appointment and we’ll tell you what’s a “yes, ” what’s a “maybe, ” and what we’d swap out for the first month.
Sleep, sweat, and a 2 to 3 week check: the habits that keep it looking full
Nighttime is where most volume gets crushed. A small switch makes a big difference: sleep on silk or satin, and put your hair up loosely before bed. We like a soft bun or loose, high pony so the hair isn’t trapped under your shoulders.
If you’re a seasonal traveler or you bounce between Bonita Springs, Naples, and Fort Myers Beach during the year, plan ahead. Humidity changes, hotel pillows, and long travel days can all add friction. Pack a wide-tooth comb and your leave-in, and keep your hair secured for flights and long drives.
Plan your maintenance: We recommend a light check at 2 to 3 weeks for small adjustments and to keep the attachment and volume in great shape. We serve follow-up visits across Bonita Springs, Estero, Naples, Fort Myers, San Carlos Park, and Fort Myers Beach.
When to reach out to our team (and when it’s totally normal)
A little “new hair awareness” is normal at first. What we don’t want is you tugging, picking, or trying to re-seat anything yourself. If something feels uncomfortable, looks uneven, or you’re seeing more tangling than you expected, let us know. We’ll take a look and get you back on track.

one of our long-time clients
We keep it simple on our end too. You’re here for hair that looks good, feels good, and fits your real life. And if you’re swinging by from North Bonita Springs or Estero before Coconut Point, we can usually help with a quick check at your next appointment time.
